The Ministry of Internal Affairs has issued a new ordinance updating the admission requirements for the Public Security Police (PSP), including changes to the age limit and height requirements. The new ordinance raises the age limit for joining the PSP from 30 to 35 years old, and for those already employed by the State, the age limit is extended to 40 years.
Previously, the age limit was strictly set at 30 years with no exceptions. Additionally, the new ordinance removes a clause that specified a minimum height requirement, which was 1.60 meters for women and 1.65 meters for men.
Armando Ferreira, the president of the National Police Union (SINAPOL), has argued that the ordinance is illegal. According to Ferreira, the law requires that such changes be negotiated with the unions, as was the case with the previous ordinance that raised the age limit to 30 years.
