As of March 31, 2025, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has increased the right of citizenship fee for adult applicants by 20 percent, raising it from $100 to $119.75. This change affects individuals aged 18 and older applying for Canadian citizenship. The processing fee remains unchanged at $530.
Adult applicants now need to pay a total of $649.75, which includes both the processing fee and the revised right of citizenship fee. For minors under the age of 18, the citizenship application fee stays at $100. Stateless adults born to Canadian parents are required to pay only the updated right of citizenship fee of $119.75. These fees apply whether the application is submitted online or in paper format.
To become a Canadian citizen, applicants generally must be permanent residents, have lived in Canada for at least 1,095 days within the last five years, have filed taxes as required, demonstrate proficiency in either English or French, pass a citizenship test, and take the oath of citizenship. The process also involves reviewing the application, completing the test and interview, and participating in a citizenship ceremony.
Once the ceremony is completed, new citizens can apply for a Canadian passport, gain the right to vote, and enjoy free access to Canada’s national parks and cultural centres.
For those who submitted their application before or after March 31, 2025, and paid the old right of citizenship fee, IRCC will not reject the application. However, they will request payment of the $19.75 difference. Applications sent by mail may face delays, but as long as they were completed before the fee change, only the additional amount will be requested.
