Recent data shows that Croatia has continued to issue a significant number of work permits to foreign nationals this year.
Since the start of 2024, Croatia has granted over 143,000 work permits, as reported by Schengen.News. This surge in work permits comes in response to labor shortages across various sectors in the country.
While foreign workers are crucial to the Croatian economy, there are concerns about them leaving the country for other EU member states after entering the bloc. To retain foreign talent, especially highly skilled professionals, suggestions have been made to improve conditions for these workers.
Vesna Vučemilović, a member of the Croatian Parliament, commented on the issue, noting that Croatia lacks a comprehensive immigration and integration strategy. She expressed concern about where foreign workers go after arriving in Croatia, highlighting that while approximately 400,000 work permits were issued over the past four years, official data shows that fewer foreign workers are actually residing in the country. Additionally, there have been calls for stricter measures against employers who exploit foreign labor.
Croatia to Extend Work Permit Validity to Three Years
In an effort to improve conditions for foreign workers, Croatia plans to extend the validity of work and residence permits. According to Croatian Labour Minister Marin Piletić, the country aims to increase the validity period from one year to three years.
This change, Piletić explained, would allow foreign workers to transition more easily between jobs and employers. It would also simplify their stay in Croatia. Furthermore, the country plans to introduce new standards for the accommodation of foreign workers.
The 2023 EURES report indicates that around 30 occupations are in shortage in Croatia. Foreign nationals applying for jobs in these sectors have a higher chance of obtaining a visa.
