As of May 2025, Cuba’s electronic visa system, known as eVisaCuba, is fully operational and now serves as the official and mandatory entry requirement for most international tourists visiting the island. Launched in August 2024 after a pilot phase in July of the same year, the system replaces the traditional paper-based “Tarjeta del Turista” or Tourist Card, offering a faster and more secure online visa application process.
The eVisaCuba initiative was introduced to modernize the visa process, improve border security, enhance pre-arrival screening, and simplify travel arrangements. By July 1, 2025, the paper tourist card will be phased out entirely, making the eVisa the sole acceptable document for tourist entry.
All non-Cuban international travelers are required to apply for the eVisa, with the exception of most Canadian tourists flying directly from Canada, who continue to benefit from a visa included in their airline ticket arrangements.
The eVisa is a single-entry document valid for up to 90 days, with a possible extension of an additional 90 days, allowing a maximum stay of 180 days.
Processing times may vary, so applying early is advised. Payments can be made online or via Cuban consulates, depending on the applicant’s country of residence.
Starting July 1, 2025, paper-based tourist cards will no longer be accepted for entry into Cuba, marking a significant change in the country’s approach to managing tourism and border procedures.
