Tesla is making its entry into the Indian market by setting up its first showroom in Mumbai, focusing on selling imported electric vehicles. This development comes after the company had previously put similar plans on hold. The showroom will play a crucial role in establishing Tesla’s presence and expanding its reach among Indian consumers.
Leasing documents reveal that Tesla has secured a five-year lease for a 4,003-square-foot space in the Maker Maxity building, a well-known business and retail hub in Bandra Kurla Complex, close to Mumbai’s airport. The lease agreement, which took effect on February 16, 2025, starts with an annual rent of approximately $446,000 and includes a 5% yearly increase, bringing it to around $542,000 by the fifth year.
This renewed focus on India follows a meeting between CEO Elon Musk and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the US. Reports suggest that Tesla has also finalized a showroom location in New Delhi, further strengthening its expansion plans in the country.
India’s electric vehicle market is experiencing rapid growth, driven by increasing consumer interest and government incentives promoting sustainable transportation. Tesla’s arrival could accelerate EV adoption and introduce new competition, particularly with local automakers such as Tata Motors and Mahindra, who have already established a strong presence in the sector.
