A student from Kolkata recently shared their experience on Reddit after successfully obtaining a U.S. F-1 student visa in just 30 seconds during an interview at the U.S. Consulate in Kolkata. The visa was granted for an undergraduate program in Neuroscience, and the quick approval came after a brief but confident interaction with the Visa Officer.
The interview began with a request for the student’s I-20 form. The officer acknowledged the significant scholarship awarded and asked how the remaining expenses would be covered. The student explained that the rest of the funding would come from their parents’ savings, answering clearly and directly—a point where many applicants often struggle.
Next, the officer inquired about the choice of major. The student responded with a well-prepared explanation, speaking enthusiastically about their interest in Neuroscience and highlighting its relevance as a STEM subject. The officer appeared satisfied and ended the interview with a straightforward statement: “I am approving your visa.” The student expressed appreciation and maintained a calm and positive demeanor throughout.
Reflecting on the experience, the student noted that several applicants ahead of them had been denied visas. Many, they observed, were unprepared or unable to explain their study plans or financial arrangements convincingly. The student emphasized the importance of preparation, attentiveness, and confidence, which they believed played a key role in their successful outcome.
