The Consular Services Portal is simplifying the application process for national visas in Germany, including work, study, and family reunification visas. This digital platform allows candidates to submit applications online, reducing waiting times at consular offices and eliminating the need for travel to submit paperwork. Currently, 167 visa offices are linked to the portal, and it is expected that this online process will be expanded internationally. This digitalization makes it easier for applicants to apply remotely.
The Foreign Minister has called the Consular Services Portal a “revolutionary” step, especially as Germany grapples with labor shortages that pose a serious challenge to its economy. The Foreign Affairs Office (BAA) has been developing the portal for over two years and launched a pilot project at three visa application centers.
Germany is currently facing around 400,000 unfilled positions in skilled sectors, which the government plans to address by attracting foreign workers, including many from India. In fact, Germany recently reached an agreement with India to increase the number of work visas for skilled Indian workers from 20,000 to 90,000, helping to fill these gaps.
Alongside the simplified visa process, the German government has taken other steps to attract migrant workers. One of the major changes is the Skilled Immigration Act, which allows skilled professionals to move to Germany with minimal requirements. Additionally, the new Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) enables migrant workers to come to Germany for work with basic knowledge of the German language, a university degree, or at least two years of relevant work experience.
