
Data from INE cited by Publituris indicates that, in January, an average of 65,600 passengers arrived daily at national airports, reflecting a 6.8% increase compared to the same period in 2024, when the daily average stood at 61,400.
Throughout the month, Portuguese airports handled a total of 16,000 commercial flights, marking a 1.6% growth compared to the previous year. The majority of arriving passengers came from international destinations, with a total of 1.6 million travelers recorded, representing a 7.6% increase.
European airports remained the primary source of international arrivals, accounting for 63.2% of the total, which signifies a 6.1% increase from January 2024. The American continent ranked as the second-largest source, contributing 11.1% of incoming passengers, an increase of 7.1%.
Outbound passengers also showed a strong presence in international travel, making up 82.4% of all departures, totaling 1.8 million travelers—an increase of 5.3%. The European continent was the most common destination, attracting 66.4% of departing passengers and registering a 4.1% increase. Meanwhile, the American continent accounted for 10.3% of all departures, following a 4.8% rise.
Passenger traffic varied across different airports. Lisbon airport handled the majority of passenger movements, processing 2.4 million travelers, which accounted for 56.9% of the national total and represented a 6.9% increase. Porto airport, responsible for 22.4% of overall passenger volume, welcomed 949,600 travelers, marking a 2.1% increase. Faro airport experienced a 6.1% rise, reaching 309,900 passengers. However, Funchal airport recorded a higher volume than Faro, with 330,000 passengers, showing a notable 9.3% increase and securing its position as the third busiest airport in the country.
Regarding travel patterns by country, France remained the top origin and destination for flights, recording increases of 6.5% and 1.9%, respectively, compared to January 2024. Spain and the United Kingdom followed closely as key origin points, with the latter ranking second in terms of passenger destinations. Brazil and Germany also featured prominently, occupying the fourth and fifth positions interchangeably, depending on whether considering inbound or outbound travel.
