The Norwegian government has announced that, starting February 1, 2025, the minimum annual income required for foreigners seeking to bring family members to Norway under family reunification rules will increase. The income threshold will rise by approximately €5,543 (NOK 65,000).
From February 1, 2025, applicants will need to demonstrate an annual income of around €34,116 (NOK 400,000), up from the current requirement of €28,572 (NOK 335,000), according to reports from Schengen.News.
Objective of the Change: Promoting Sustainability and Self-Sufficiency
The Norwegian Ministry explains that the increased income requirement aims to ensure controlled and sustainable immigration. This measure also seeks to promote self-reliance among immigrant families, reduce the financial strain on public resources, and support better integration into Norwegian society. Additionally, the policy aligns Norway’s immigration rules with those of other comparable nations.
Justice Minister’s Comments on the Decision
Justice and Public Security Minister Emilie Enger Mehl commented that this adjustment reflects measures announced by the government in the fall of the previous year. The Minister stated that the increase is a necessary step to maintain a sustainable level of immigration to Norway.
She also hinted that further changes might be introduced, with the possibility of additional increases to the income threshold later in the year. The impact of this new requirement on foreigners planning to reunite with their families in Norway remains to be seen.
