Irregular immigrants who have made Social Security contributions for a minimum of 12 months will now have the opportunity to apply for a residence permit in Portugal.
This change follows the recent approval of a draft law by Parliament, proposed by the Liberal Initiative, which aims to extend the transitional period for the legalisation of immigrants.
Previously, the sudden end of the expression of interest process on June 3 created barriers for those irregular workers who had contributed to Social Security but lacked a residence permit.
The new provisions will allow these individuals to regularize their status, ensuring their entry into Portugal is recognized as legal.
This development comes as part of efforts to enhance immigration policies and provide pathways for individuals to secure legal residency in the country.
