Latvia is set to implement stricter entry requirements for third-country nationals who do not hold a visa or residence permit issued by Latvian authorities, starting in September.
Aiming to enhance national security and border control, the new regulations will require affected travelers to undergo screening before entering Latvia. As part of this process, they must provide detailed personal information, including details about their relatives. The Latvian parliament emphasized the necessity of these measures, particularly for citizens of Russia and Belarus, citing concerns that some EU member states do not conduct thorough security checks on individuals from these countries.
Under the new rules, third-country nationals without a Latvian visa or residence permit must submit information at least 48 hours before arrival. This includes the purpose and duration of their visit, travel itinerary, and contact details. Additionally, they must disclose whether any of their relatives have held elected positions, worked as state or municipal officials, or served in the armed forces, special services, customs, law enforcement, or diplomatic services.
Diplomatic personnel and individuals on short-term official visits will be exempt from these requirements. Authorities plan to review the effectiveness of these measures annually.
Alongside these entry restrictions, Latvia also intends to limit the validity of temporary permits, which will be reduced to a maximum of two months.
Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, supported by Belarus, Latvia has significantly tightened its border security measures.
