These changes include the elimination of mandatory motorcycle inspections, the creation of a new toll classification, the authorization of bus lane access for motorcyclists, and the removal of non-slip materials on roads. 1. End of Mandatory Motorcycle Inspections
One of the most significant changes is the revocation of mandatory periodic inspections for motorcycles, tricycles, and quadricycles with engine capacities exceeding 125 cm³. This regulation, which had been in place since 2012 but never fully implemented, will now be removed from the legal framework. According to the Automóvel Club de Portugal (ACP), this decision ends the long-standing uncertainty surrounding motorcycle inspections.
2. Lower Toll Costs for Motorcyclists
Motorcyclists will also benefit from reduced toll fees. A new tariff classification has been introduced, ensuring that motorcyclists pay no more than 50% of the toll rate for Class 1 passenger vehicles. This measure responds to longstanding demands from the motorcycling community for a fairer toll system, as advocated by the ACP.
3. Access to Bus Lanes
Motorcyclists are now officially allowed to use bus lanes. While this was previously up to local authorities to decide, the new legislation establishes uniformity across the country, ensuring that motorcyclists have safer and more efficient routes in urban areas. This change aims to ease traffic congestion and improve safety for motorcyclists in cities.
4. Road Safety Improvements
In terms of road safety, significant improvements are being made. Non-slip materials in road expansion joints are being removed, and speed bumps will be installed on dangerous curves. These measures aim to reduce accidents, particularly among motorcyclists, who are more vulnerable to slippery surfaces and road hazards.
These new measures are part of a broader strategy by the Portuguese Government to encourage sustainable mobility. The government has previously introduced initiatives such as VAT reductions on bicycle purchases and financial incentives for the acquisition of electric vehicles.
