Immigration New Zealand has announced that the country is now in its peak student visa processing period, which runs from May through August. This means international students planning to start or continue their studies in New Zealand from mid-2025 onwards should apply for their student visa well in advance to avoid delays. With visa processing times already extending, those aiming for a July to September intake must apply at least three months before their planned travel date.
This update is especially important for students beginning undergraduate, postgraduate, or English language programs in 2025. If you haven’t submitted your visa application yet, are waiting on final admission or financial documents, or are hoping for a fast decision to finalize travel and housing, it’s essential to act now. Delaying your application could result in a missed intake, a visa rejection, or increased travel expenses.
To manage these potential delays, students are advised to apply as early as possible and ensure their application is complete from the start. During the peak period, Immigration New Zealand will not request missing documents, so submitting everything at once is key. If your final Offer of Place or funding proof isn’t ready yet, consider asking your university for a conditional offer letter to begin the visa process.
There are several types of student visas available for international applicants. The Fee-Paying Student Visa is the most common and is valid for the duration of your course. The Pathway Student Visa allows enrollment in up to three consecutive courses and can be valid for up to five years. There is also an Exchange Student Visa for those taking part in approved exchange programs and a Foreign Government Supported Student Visa for those funded by their home governments.
To apply, you’ll need several key documents: a valid passport, an Offer of Place from a New Zealand institution, proof of tuition fee payment or a scholarship award letter, evidence of funds for living costs (at least NZD $20,000 per year), health and travel insurance, and possibly medical or police certificates depending on your situation.
The application process is fully online. Create an account on the official Immigration New Zealand website, prepare your documents, complete the student visa application form, upload all required documents, pay the visa fee (around NZD $375), and submit your application. You can track your progress and receive updates through the online portal. Once your visa is approved, you can move forward with booking travel and accommodation.
