Distribution of solar systems will be conducted through computerised lottery system
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has officially inaugurated the CM Punjab Free Solar Panel Scheme aimed at providing permanent relief to the public from high electricity.
Punjab to Distribute 100,000 Free Solar Systems This Year
As part of a new initiative, Punjab will provide 100,000 solar panel systems to eligible residents free of charge over the course of the year.
Speaking at the launch, the Chief Minister emphasized the importance of using public resources to ease the financial burden on citizens. “This initiative is designed to reduce the strain of high electricity bills while promoting the adoption of renewable and sustainable energy,” she stated.
Key Features of the Scheme:
The provincial Energy Secretary outlined the key details of the program:
- The scheme is open to consumers who use up to 200 units of electricity per month.
- Those using 100 units per month will receive a 550-watt solar system, while those consuming up to 200 units will be provided with a 1,100-watt system.
- Consumers can register for the program starting today through an online portal or by sending an SMS to 8800. Applicants will be verified using their monthly bill reference number and CNIC number.
- A computerized lottery will ensure the fair distribution of solar systems, and a helpline will be available to assist users with the registration process and any ongoing support.
To prevent theft, the solar panels and inverters will be linked to the consumer’s CNIC number.
The initiative is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 57,000 tons annually. It will also reduce the federal government’s subsidy expenditure while enhancing the province’s long-term energy independence.
At the launch, Maryam Nawaz highlighted that over 7.3 million consumers in Punjab have already benefited from electricity subsidies, with a rate of Rs 14 per unit. She emphasized that this new scheme marks a significant step in the government’s ongoing efforts to prioritize renewable energy and support the welfare of the public.
Applications for the free solar systems are now open, and eligible consumers are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.
