
Madrid has officially reopened its embassy in Damascus, Syria, after a closure of 12 years. This significant move took place in the presence of top diplomats, marking the end of a prolonged diplomatic hiatus. The reopening comes as Western nations begin to restore relations with Syria following the removal of President Bashar Assad from power, Schengen.News reports.
Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares expressed his honor at being present for the embassy’s reopening, where he met with Syria’s newly appointed authority head, Ahmed Al-Sharaa, as reported by Prensa Latina.
Hungary to Reopen Its Embassy in Syria Soon
Following the stabilization of the security situation in Syria, Hungary has also decided to reopen its embassy in Damascus. Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó announced the decision, describing it as an important step. The reopening will enable Hungary to gather reliable, firsthand information on developments in the region. Szijjártó emphasized Hungary’s commitment to supporting peace and stability in the Middle East and its focus on the welfare of Christian communities in the region.
EU’s Plans to Reopen Delegation in Syria
In December 2024, EU Foreign Affairs Chief Kaja Kallas stated that the European Union plans to reopen its diplomatic delegation in Syria. She explained that this initiative would help strengthen bilateral relations between the EU and Syria and ensure that the EU maintains a presence in the country, avoiding any power vacuum. During a European Parliament debate, Kallas emphasized the importance of re-engaging with Syria to influence local developments positively.
