Declining UK Visa Applications and Increased Scrutiny
Skilled Worker and Health & Care Worker Visas
The number of applications for Health & Care Worker visas has significantly decreased. After reaching a peak of 18,300 in August 2023, applications dropped to 1,700 by February 2025 due to stricter employer compliance measures and policy changes introduced in spring 2024.
Similarly, applications for Skilled Worker visas have declined from 10,100 in April 2024 to 3,500 in February 2025. The number of dependents applying under both visa categories has also fallen, following policy changes in 2024 that restricted their eligibility.
Temporary Work Visas: Youth Mobility & Seasonal Worker Visas
Applications under the Youth Mobility Scheme have declined by 8% compared to the previous year, despite initiatives such as the India Young Professionals Scheme.
In contrast, applications for Seasonal Worker visas have remained steady, with 36,800 applications recorded in February 2025—a 7% increase from 2024—indicating continued demand for roles in agriculture and hospitality.
Study Visas: Decline Following Policy Changes
The number of Sponsored Study Visa applications has decreased by 12% compared to February 2024.
A major shift was observed in applications from dependents of international students, which saw an 86% drop after a rule change in January 2024. Under the new policy, dependents are only permitted if the student is enrolled in a postgraduate research program or a government-funded course. The restrictions appear to have discouraged some international students who previously relied on the ability to bring family members while studying.
Family Visas: Impact of Income Requirement Changes
Family visa applications surged in early 2024 before the UK government increased the income requirement in April 2024. Applications peaked at 12,700 in April 2024 but dropped to 6,600 by February 2025.
Meanwhile, Family Reunion visas for spouses and children of refugees increased in late 2024, partially offsetting the overall decline in family visa applications.
