The Trump administration’s immigration policies continue to create uncertainty, especially for international students, including many from India. In a recent development, the US Embassy in India issued a warning to foreign students on student visas, cautioning them against dropping out of their academic programs. The message was first posted on social media and later shared by the US Consulates in Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata.
The embassy stated that international students who drop out, skip classes, or leave their academic programs without informing their schools risk having their student visas revoked. This could also impact their eligibility for future US visas. Students were urged to follow the terms of their visa and maintain their student status to avoid complications.
This warning comes amid a broader immigration crackdown. Just days earlier, the US Embassy warned that a criminal conviction—regardless of how minor—could lead to a permanent ban from entering the United States. Officials stressed the importance of honesty in visa applications and interviews, stating that providing false information could also result in a ban.
There was also a reminder that overstaying a visa, whether it be a student visa (F-1), a work visa (H-1B), or a tourist visa (B-2), could lead to deportation and a permanent ban from returning to the US. These messages are part of a growing effort by the US government to tighten immigration rules and enforce visa compliance more strictly.
According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, between 2009 and 2024, 15,564 Indian nationals were deported from the US via chartered and commercial flights. Since January 2025 alone, 682 Indian nationals have been deported, highlighting the seriousness of the issue.
