Wistron, a Taiwanese electronics manufacturer, has partnered with Shapoorji Pallonji to construct a new laptop manufacturing facility in Bengaluru. This facility is part of Wistron’s ₹1,500-crore investment plan. Sources have confirmed that the construction contract for the plant, valued at approximately $30 million, has been signed between ICT Service Management Solutions (a Wistron subsidiary) and Shapoorji Pallonji.
In February 2024, Wistron, through ICT, signed an agreement with the Karnataka government to invest ₹1,500 crore in setting up the manufacturing plant. The Karnataka government has allocated 32 acres of land at the Hi-Tech Defence & Aerospace Park in Devanahalli, located on the outskirts of Bengaluru, for the project. The plant is expected to create jobs for 3,000 individuals and will focus on exporting more than 50% of the laptops produced there.
Originally, Wistron planned a capital investment of $40 million (₹350 crore) for the construction of the factory. However, this amount was later revised to $50 million (₹450 crore) as of February. The construction work on the plant is set to begin soon, with production slated to start by January 2026.
In October 2023, Wistron exited the Apple iPhone manufacturing business in India, selling its entire stake in its iPhone assembly unit to Tata Electronics for $131 million (over ₹1,000 crore). This move marked Tata’s entry into the iPhone assembly business in India. Despite this exit, Wistron maintains a presence in India through three subsidiaries: ICT Service Management Solutions, Smartiply India, and Wistron Automotive Electronics (India). While ICT handles import-export, service, and maintenance operations, Smartiply India focuses on developing internet platforms and IoT products. Wistron Automotive Electronics is involved in the manufacturing, R&D, and design of automotive electronics.
The new Bengaluru facility by ICT will serve as a contract manufacturer for global laptop brands, in addition to providing warranty repair services, inventory management, and logistics support for Wistron’s laptop operations in India.
