
Portalegre stood out in Alto Alentejo by registering the biggest increase in the number of unemployed people at the end of January this year, compared to December 2024.
According to data from the Institute of Employment and Professional Training (IEFP), Portalegre saw the number of unemployed people increase from 562 to 631, adding 69 more people without a job.
In addition to Portalegre, other municipalities in Alto Alentejo also saw an increase in unemployment. Ponte de Sor saw an increase from 450 to 498 unemployed people. Castelo de Vide and Avis saw smaller increases, from 65 to 77 and from 132 to 140, respectively.
Elvas bucked this trend, showing the largest reduction in the number of unemployed, with a decrease from 1,155 in December to 1,074 at the end of January, corresponding to 81 fewer unemployed people, but it still remains the municipality with the most unemployed. Next, Nisa recorded a drop of 16 unemployed people, and Campo Maior saw 14 fewer unemployed people.
Gavião, Sousel and Alter do Chão also recorded small reductions in the number of unemployed people.
