Indian students aspiring to study in Japan now have an exciting opportunity through the Mitsui Scholarship Program for 2025, launched by Mitsui & Co., a global leader in trading and investment. This fully-funded, five-year program is designed to support young Indian talent aiming to build an international career.
The program includes a one-year intensive Japanese language course through the Japan Student Services Organization, followed by four years of undergraduate study at a Japanese university. It offers options in two main academic streams:
Science and Engineering – Fields such as Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Information and Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Metallurgy, and other technical areas.
Social Sciences and Commerce – Programs include subjects like International Economics, Law, Political Science, Accounting, Finance, Enterprise Management, and related disciplines.
Note that courses in medicine, pharmacy, and veterinary sciences are not included in this scholarship.
To qualify, applicants must be Indian nationals under the age of 21, having secured at least 80% in their Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) or Senior Secondary Certificate (SSC), from either the CBSE or ICSE boards. Science applicants should have studied Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and English. Commerce students are expected to have studied Mathematics, Economics, Business Studies, and English.
Language proficiency in Japanese is also required. Applicants should ideally hold a Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) N3 certificate. Those with an N4 certificate may still be considered if they are actively preparing for N3.
The scholarship provides generous financial assistance. Students will receive a monthly living allowance of JPY 145,000 (approximately ₹85,000), an accommodation subsidy—JPY 5,000 during the first year and JPY 25,000 for the following four years—and full coverage of tuition fees for both language training and university studies. Additionally, a one-way economy class air ticket from New Delhi to Tokyo will be provided at the start of the program, and a return ticket at the end. Upon arrival, students will also receive a one-time allowance of JPY 50,000 (roughly ₹30,000). However, personal expenses like meals and local transport are not included.
Applications are open from May 1 to June 30, 2025. Candidates selected through the screening process conducted between July and September 2025 will begin their language studies in April 2026. After completing the language training and passing the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) in November 2026, successful candidates will start their university studies from April 2027.
This initiative is an excellent gateway for students interested in technology, business, or research to experience Japanese culture, receive a quality education, and develop a foundation for a global career.
