A new U.S. visa regulation has been implemented at American embassies and consulates in several countries. Effective for all visa interviews scheduled on or after April 1, the rule requires applicants to present a DS-160 visa application form with a confirmation or barcode number that begins with “AA” and matches the number used when scheduling the appointment.
The DS-160 is an online nonimmigrant visa application form required for individuals seeking temporary travel to the United States. This form must be submitted electronically via the U.S. Department of State’s website and is used by consular officers, along with the personal interview, to assess an applicant’s eligibility for a visa.
The new rule applies across a range of visa categories, including B1/B2 (business/tourist), F-1 (student), H-1B (work), and J-1 (exchange visitor), among others. If the barcode number on the DS-160 does not match the one used to book the appointment, applicants will not be allowed to proceed with the interview. Instead, they must reschedule, which could lead to delays in travel plans, employment start dates, academic enrollment, or family reunification.
It is common for applicants to complete a new DS-160 after scheduling their visa appointment without updating the appointment profile with the new barcode. To avoid any issues, it is essential to verify that the barcode number on the DS-160 matches the one used during the appointment booking. Ensuring this match helps support a smooth interview process.
