India’s deep-tech and frontier technology ecosystem continues to face funding challenges, with a significant share of capital flowing toward consumer internet businesses, according to a report by venture capital firm 3one4 Capital.
Despite government initiatives aimed at fostering deep-tech innovation through various programs, innovation hubs, and increasing venture capital support, the report emphasizes the need for more patient capital from both private and public stakeholders. Given the long development cycles and high infrastructure demands of deep-tech ventures, sustained financial support is crucial for their growth.
A shortage of substantial funding and cutting-edge research facilities has led to a notable migration of research talent to the US and Europe. While the establishment of the National Research Foundation is a step toward reversing this trend, its success hinges on securing significant funding to drive meaningful impact.
To strengthen the sector, the report calls for comprehensive policy reforms, including tax incentives, streamlined regulations, and a clear long-term vision to attract private investment. The deep-tech industry in India is evolving beyond a niche and is now positioned as an investment-ready and policy-backed opportunity with global relevance. However, transforming deep-tech innovation into commercially viable and internationally competitive businesses will require consistent capital flow, strong ecosystem collaboration, and patient execution.
