For skilled professionals looking to build a future in Canada, Alberta remains a top destination with its expanding economy and strong demand for labor across many industries. In 2025, the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) continues to provide several pathways for individuals to gain permanent residency, and recent changes have made the process more accessible and aligned with current labor market needs.
The AAIP is Alberta’s Provincial Nominee Program, which allows the province to select foreign nationals who can contribute to its economy and communities. It includes streams for workers, international graduates, and entrepreneurs both inside and outside of Canada. Four key worker-focused streams remain active: the Alberta Opportunity Stream for temporary foreign workers already in the province, the Rural Renewal Stream for skilled workers with offers in smaller communities, the Tourism and Hospitality Stream for those in Alberta’s service industries, and the Alberta Express Entry Stream for applicants with federal Express Entry profiles that match provincial priorities.
As of April 2025, the province introduced two notable updates. The Pearson Test of English (PTE) Core is now accepted as a valid language proficiency exam across all AAIP streams, alongside IELTS and CELPIP. This option offers faster results and a fully digital experience, easing the testing process for international candidates. Additionally, the application fee for worker streams has increased to CAD 1,500 to better reflect the program’s operational demands. This fee applies to all four open streams and must be submitted within 24 hours of a complete application.
Alberta continues to face workforce shortages in a number of fields. High-demand jobs include healthcare roles such as registered and practical nurses, IT positions like software developers and systems analysts, skilled trades including electricians and mechanics, transport professionals such as truck drivers, as well as accountants and early childhood educators. These occupations are ideal for applicants under the Opportunity, Rural Renewal, and Express Entry streams.
To be eligible for AAIP in 2025, applicants typically need a valid job offer from a registered Alberta employer, at least one year of relevant work experience within the past three years, proof of English proficiency (CLB 4–6 or equivalent in accepted tests), and educational credentials comparable to a Canadian high school diploma or higher. Applicants must also demonstrate access to adequate settlement funds unless already employed in the province and must show a clear intent to live and work in Alberta permanently. Entrepreneur applicants face additional criteria related to business experience and investment levels.
As of May 2025, Alberta has issued over 1,100 nominations under the Opportunity Stream, with available space remaining in all streams. To begin the process, candidates submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through Alberta’s official immigration program website. High-ranking candidates will receive invitations to apply, and once invited, they must complete the application and submit the required fee promptly. Successful applicants gain a provincial nomination, significantly improving their chances of securing Canadian permanent residency through the federal immigration system.
