Portugal to Introduce New Type of Golden Visa Aimed to Bring Social Investments in Immigrant Support Projects

The new Portuguese government has unveiled plans to broaden the categories of investment that qualify foreigners for residence permits, commonly referred to as Golden Visas.

As part of these reforms, the government intends to transition the existing Residence Permits for Investments (Golden Visas) to a new framework called Residence Permits for Social Investment. This change will introduce additional investment opportunities, as reported by Schengen.News.

Under the Residence Permits for Social Investment, foreigners will be eligible for permits by investing in facilities and infrastructure that support immigrants, as well as in integration projects. Through this initiative, the Portuguese government aims to attract more foreign investors looking to secure residency by focusing their investments on projects that directly benefit immigrant communities.

We want ARIs [Residence Permits for Investment] to be mobilised and used to finance investment in equipment and infrastructure to support the reception and integration of immigrants.Portugal’s Minister of the Presidency, António Leitão Amaro

To streamline the process for investors seeking Residence Permits for Social Investment and to facilitate access to Portuguese residency, the government has indicated plans to introduce intermediation and accreditation measures.

These proposed changes aim to reduce the time required for foreign investors to gain accreditation and secure their Residence Permits for Social Investment, contingent upon approval of the plan.

However, specific details regarding the investment amounts required for these permits and other related information have yet to be disclosed.

Despite the removal of real estate investments from the program, these two groups are still leading the way in terms of investment for Golden Visas in Portugal.

Interest from other nationalities is also significant. Since January, inquiries about the Golden Visa Program have surged, increasing fourfold compared to the same period in 2023.
