The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) reports that a depression will remain almost stationary northwest of the Iberian Peninsula until Monday.
Periods of rain are expected across the mainland today, which may be heavy as a cold front moves through, later transitioning into showers that will persist until Sunday. On Saturday, snowfall is forecast above 1,500 meters in altitude. Strong winds with gusts reaching around 80 km/h, and up to 110 km/h in higher areas, are also anticipated, along with rough sea conditions.
Due to the deteriorating weather, a yellow warning has been issued for all mainland districts from midday to 3 p.m. today and again from 3 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Saturday. A yellow wind warning is also in effect for the districts of Porto, Viseu, Guarda, Faro, Vila Real, Setúbal, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Beja, Castelo Branco, Aveiro, Coimbra, and Braga for today and Saturday.
Regarding sea conditions, an orange warning has been issued for the districts of Faro, Porto, Setúbal, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Beja, Aveiro, Coimbra, and Braga for Sunday and Monday, before being downgraded to yellow. In the districts of Guarda and Castelo Branco, an orange warning will be in place from 9 p.m. on Saturday until midnight on Monday. A yellow warning has also been issued for Castelo Branco, Guarda, Bragança, Viseu, and Vila Real for Saturday and Sunday due to expected snowfall.
The Madeira archipelago will also be affected, with an orange warning in effect for the North Coast of Madeira Island and Porto Santo from Saturday to Monday due to rough seas. Waves from the northwest are expected to reach heights of 5 to 6 meters, with maximum waves potentially reaching 11 meters. The region remains under a yellow warning for strong wind and rain from today.
Orange warnings indicate a moderate to high risk due to meteorological conditions, while yellow warnings signal a risk for activities dependent on weather conditions.
With the worsening weather, the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) has advised the population to remain alert to potential flooding and accidents.
