If you’re planning to apply for a UAE Residency Visa in 2025, there’s a key update to be aware of regarding the medical examination process. The UAE Public Health Services Department has introduced a new system for medical fitness exams that is now fully digitized, categorized by profession, and much more efficient than before.
This updated procedure applies to all expats applying for a new visa or renewing an existing one, as well as employers handling visa arrangements for their teams. The medical fitness exam remains a non-negotiable requirement — anyone applying for or renewing a residency visa must pass this screening to be eligible to live and work in the country.
To simplify the process, the entire application has moved online. Applicants are now required to register through the UAE Pass, which is mandatory. Once registered, they can apply via official platforms, pay the necessary fees, and choose a designated health center. On the day of the appointment, individuals must bring their Emirates ID and passport. The exam includes a chest X-ray and a blood test, with results sent via SMS and email within 24 hours. The whole process is now quicker, paperless, and more convenient.
The exam checks for several major communicable diseases, including HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, leprosy, and hepatitis B and C. Some professions require additional steps. For instance, those applying for roles such as domestic workers, childcare providers, salon staff, and healthcare personnel must receive the hepatitis B vaccination if applying for the first time, which comes with an extra cost.
The updated fee structure depends on the applicant’s category. General workers pay AED 260, domestic workers pay AED 360, and salon or healthcare staff pay AED 310. These fees typically cover the blood test, X-ray, and document printing, with some categories including vaccinations or pregnancy tests. Some service centers may add a small service charge, so it’s advisable to check in advance.
This medical test is mandatory for anyone aged 18 and over, whether they’re applying for the first time, renewing a visa, or being sponsored by an employer. Employers managing more than ten employees will need a delegate card to handle the process on behalf of their staff.
Once the test is complete, applicants can expect to receive their medical report within a day, allowing for a smoother continuation of the residency visa process. Preparing ahead by scheduling early and having the right documents on hand will help ensure everything goes smoothly.
