Donald Trump made a remark about astronaut Sunita Williams, commenting on her distinctive hair while discussing the ongoing situation of two astronauts stranded aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Assuring them of their rescue, he stated, “We’re coming up to get you.”
The President floated the idea of personally joining a mission to bring back Williams and fellow astronaut Butch Wilmore, who have remained in space for over nine months—far exceeding their intended eight-day stay. He criticized the previous administration, attributing the delay to former President Joe Biden’s policies.
From the Oval Office, Trump claimed that Biden’s leadership left the astronauts stranded and revealed a conversation with Elon Musk, asking if SpaceX could intervene. Musk reportedly agreed and is preparing a rescue mission.
During his speech, Trump humorously referenced Williams’ well-known zero-gravity hairstyle, calling it a “solid head of hair” and adding that there were “no games” with it. When asked about his message for the astronauts, he expressed support and reassured them of their return.
Blaming Biden for what he called a failure of leadership, Trump labeled him the “most incompetent president” and vowed to ensure such a situation wouldn’t happen again. Looking skyward, he speculated on the astronauts’ extended stay in space, joking about their survival in close quarters.
Musk confirmed the upcoming rescue, stating that the astronauts were initially supposed to return after eight days but had now spent eight months in space. He claimed SpaceX could have brought them back six months earlier, but authorization was denied by the Biden administration. Following Trump’s request, Musk announced that the mission would proceed as soon as possible.
Williams and Wilmore originally launched aboard Boeing’s Starliner in June 2024, but technical failures, including helium leaks and thruster malfunctions, prevented their safe return.
In January 2025, Williams set a record for the most spacewalking hours by a woman, with over 62 hours logged. She has also previously completed a triathlon in space using specialized equipment.
