Foreign teachers who receive job offers from employers in New Zealand now have the opportunity to apply directly for residency. Previously, primary school teachers were required to follow the Work to Residence pathway, which meant working in the country for two years before becoming eligible for residency. This change allows them to apply immediately upon securing employment.
New Zealand is strengthening its appeal to international talent by expanding the Straight to Residence pathway to include primary teachers. The government has confirmed that, starting March 26, 2025, primary teachers will be added to the Green List under this category, providing them with a more direct route to residency.
With this update, eligible primary teachers who receive a job offer from an accredited employer can apply for residency without the requirement of first gaining work experience in New Zealand. This adjustment follows a similar change for secondary school teachers, who have been on the Straight to Residence pathway since May 1, 2024. These professionals can apply for residency from outside New Zealand once they secure employment with a recognized employer, eliminating the need to complete a two-year work period before qualifying.
By streamlining the process, New Zealand aims to address ongoing teacher shortages, particularly in regions such as Auckland and Northland. The changes are expected to attract more skilled educators to fill critical gaps in the education sector.
The Green List outlines occupations that are in high demand across the country. Workers whose roles are included on this list and who meet the required qualifications, registration, or experience criteria may be eligible for immediate residency or may qualify after working in New Zealand for a specified period.
To determine eligibility, foreign workers must check the Green List to see whether their profession falls under Tier 1 for a Straight to Residence Visa or Tier 2 for a Work to Residence Visa. Each tier has specific qualifications, registration, and experience requirements that must be met to apply.
Applicants eligible for the Straight to Residence Visa must either be currently employed or have a job offer from an accredited employer in a Tier 1 Green List occupation. This visa grants the right to live, work, and study in New Zealand. Those working in a Tier 2 Green List occupation can apply for the Work to Residence Visa if they have been employed in that role for at least 24 months.
