For American travelers, the ability to obtain a Visa on Arrival (VoA) simplifies international trips by eliminating the need for pre-arranged visas. As visa policies evolve each year, knowing which destinations allow entry without prior approval can make travel planning easier. In 2025, more than 30 countries offer VoA access to US passport holders, with varying durations and conditions.
A VoA allows travelers to secure a visa upon arrival at immigration checkpoints, typically requiring a valid passport, payment of fees, and sometimes proof of onward travel. The length of stay and permissible activities, such as tourism or business, depend on the destination.
Several countries across different regions continue to provide this option for US citizens. In Asia and the Pacific, destinations include the Maldives with a 30-day stay, Indonesia allowing 30 days for tourism, and Nepal offering visas for 15, 30, or 90 days. Sri Lanka provides a 30-day stay with an option for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) instead, while Laos and Cambodia allow 30-day visits. Bangladesh grants a 30-day VoA for both business and tourism purposes.
The Middle East also offers several VoA options, including Jordan with a 30-day stay, where the Jordan Pass may eliminate visa fees. Oman permits stays of 10 or 30 days, while Kuwait offers 30-day access.
In Africa, Egypt grants a 30-day tourist visa upon arrival. Madagascar offers options of 15, 30, or 60 days, while Mauritius allows a 60-day stay. Tanzania and Senegal provide 90-day access, with Guinea-Bissau offering the same duration. Comoros permits a 45-day visit.
Europe has limited VoA availability, but Armenia grants visas for 21 or 120 days. Turkey allows stays between 30 and 90 days, with an alternative eVisa option.
The Caribbean and South America also welcome US travelers through VoA programs. Bolivia and Suriname provide 90-day access, while Antigua and Barbuda allow a 30-day stay. Dominica offers 21 days, and Saint Kitts and Nevis permits 30 days.
Some changes have taken effect in 2025 regarding visa policies. Vietnam and Thailand have discontinued their VoA programs in favor of eVisas. Saudi Arabia now grants VoA for US tourists, while the UAE offers a free 30-day visa that can be extended. Qatar permits a 30-day VoA, renewable for another 30 days.
To obtain a VoA, US citizens must meet specific requirements, which generally include a passport with at least six months of validity, proof of onward travel, and sufficient funds to cover their stay. Some countries require visa fees, which range from $10 to $100, while a few may request passport-sized photographs for processing.
With VoA programs providing convenient access to numerous destinations, staying updated on visa policy changes remains essential. Before departure, travelers should verify the latest entry requirements to ensure a smooth and hassle-free experience.
