Individuals aged 55 or younger can apply for a resident visa or a work visa that leads to residency after working in New Zealand for at least two years.
With updated processing priorities for skilled residence applications, Immigration New Zealand focuses on specific visa categories, including pathways for skilled workers, those employed in roles listed on the Green List, and employees of businesses relocating to New Zealand.
For skilled workers, the Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa allows individuals to apply for residency if they work in a qualified occupation. Eligibility includes meeting age requirements, securing a job offer, passing a points-based assessment, demonstrating English proficiency, and meeting health and character standards.
The Work to Residence Visa applies to those working in Green List Tier 2 occupations. Individuals must work for an accredited employer for two years before applying for residency while meeting salary and experience criteria.
The Straight to Residence Visa is available for individuals employed in Green List Tier 1 occupations. Those who meet salary or professional registration requirements can apply directly for residence without completing a work period in New Zealand.
Employees of businesses relocating to New Zealand may qualify for residency if they hold a key role within an approved company.
Other pathways to residency include the Talent (Accredited Employer) Work Visa, which allows individuals with job offers from accredited employers to apply for residency after two years of employment while meeting salary requirements. Entrepreneurs planning to start or buy a business may qualify for an Entrepreneur Work Visa, with the possibility of applying for residency after six months if they meet investment and job creation criteria.
The Global Impact Work Visa provides a pathway to residency for participants in the Edmund Hillary Fellowship, allowing for a stay of up to 36 months with residency eligibility after 30 months.
Special residency categories are available for citizens of Samoa, Kiribati, Tuvalu, Tonga, and Fiji through a ballot system, as well as for religious workers who have been serving in New Zealand for at least three years.
Applying for a New Zealand work or resident visa involves verifying whether a job is on the Green List, ensuring the employer is accredited, submitting an application online or by mail, providing required documents such as proof of qualifications and job offers, and awaiting processing by Immigration New Zealand.
